Halloween is the time that children love but the ghosts and goblins walking the streets while trick or treating do scare our pets. Those constantly opened doors and gates mean that many pets are lost on this holiday. The Animal Assistance League recommends:
- Keep your pets inside a room that is far away from the front door entrance so there is no chance they can run out of a frequently opened door.
- Have current license and identification tags with home phone number and alternate phone number (including area codes) securely attached to your pet's collar at all times. Implanting a micro identification chip (which can be done in minutes at your veterinarian) is also important since collars can fall off. Every animal brought to a shelter and humane society is scanned for a microchip. Click here for a listing of shelters.
- Be sure all candy, especially chocolate, is kept where your pet can't find it. Small amounts of chocolate and other sweets can make a pet very ill!
- If possible, keep all your pets indoors and watch for older tricksters who might harm or steal neighborhood animals. Some people treat animals cruelly at Halloween and even use them in sacrificial rites. (This is especially true for white cats and solid black cats.)
- If you lose a pet at anytime, put up signs throughout the neighborhood and place lost and found ads. Found ads are free in most newspapers. Since there are several shelters in the area, be sure to check them all. And don't just call the shelter - visit them frequently in search of your pet, as lost animals sometimes do not surface for a week or more. Also, call the Animal
Assistance League's HELPLINE at: (714) 978.PETS so we can work with you to find your lost pet.
